Calling all Hokies!

You may have visited this site with a simple question: What is VT Oxfam?

We’re a campus club chapter of Oxfam America, an international relief organization committed to finding lasting solutions to hunger, poverty, and injustice. What are we trying to do?

Save the world.

And we need every Hokie to do it. We want to lead other universities by example in our efforts to tap into the Virginia Tech giving spirit that made us the number one collegiate Relay for Life fundraiser in the country. VT students are capable of amazing things and have a variety of amazing talents. There’s only one requirement to join our club at any point during the semester: You have to want to do something about the hunger and poverty crisis around the world.

We need Hokies of all disciplines and talents: engineers, humanities students, computer scientists, etc. We’re an organization that works on all levels to reach our goals, modeled after our parent NGO, Oxfam America. So by joining us, not only do you make a difference, but you develop your talents in a meaningful way.

It’s the holiday season. Oxfam members are asking fellow Hokies, friends, and family for a special holiday present: A donation to our club. Your money will go toward these current projects:

  • Oxfam America – Our home organization, with several campaigns that help various communities worldwide in the struggle against international crises. GOAL MET.
  • VT Oxfam Kiva – A percentage of our funds will go toward our Kiva team to make microloans to entrepreneurs in need. GOAL MET.
  • Project Zoranger – Our team-up with the Haitian group Foundation Manmo to construct a well that will provide clean drinking water to Zoranger, Haiti, a community in need. $$ LEFT: $6,000
General funds will be disbursed by the beginning of Virginia Tech’s 2010 spring semester in January.

Check out our upcoming meetings, co-sponsored events, and news in international aid in our posts below.

Thanks for visiting. Join the fight. Be the impact.

Hungry Hokies

Oxfam at Virginia Tech’s next meeting is November 30, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. in Holden Auditorium, the Monday students get back from Thanksgiving. It’s our last general campus meeting and want more people to attend than ever! We’ll have a presentation on water rights.

We want to congratulate the Hungry Hokies and the Muslim Students Association for raising over $4,400 for the Blacksburg Interfaith Pantry in yesterday’s Fast-a-Thon! The Blacksburg Interfaith Pantry helps over 1,300 people who rely on local businesses and citizens’ generosities to end their hunger. This is right here in Blacksburg, Virginia, next to one of the most successful universities in the country. Imagine what people are going through in major U.S. urban areas or in famine-stricken areas of Africa, Asia, and South America.

If you’d like to help us work with the Blacksburg Interfaith Pantry as one of our Local Impact initiatives, please attend our meetings. You can also e-mail us at oxfam(at)vt(dot)edu.

Again, congrats on the good work, Hungry Hokies!

We’re headed out on Thanksgiving break soon, but you can still do your part! For the holidays, consider asking your family for donations to a aid organization of your choice. If you donate to Oxfam at Virginia Tech, you will be contributing to our Zoranger, Haiti Project. We’re on our way to building a well that will provide clean drinking water to a community filled with people trying to make a living and beautiful children, many of them orphans.

If Fast-a-Thon taught us anything, it’s that food tastes a lot better after you’ve made an effort to realize how vital it is and after helping someone in need satiate their own hunger.

So, VT, we hope you have a good Thanksgiving Break and we also hope to see a lot of you when we get back!

Gratitude

It’s the season to be thankful.

We’re thankful for the $675 we raised with our Charity Date Auction on November 11. The money will go to the projects we listed above.

As the semester draws to a close, we’re not putting the brakes on our efforts to fight injustice, hunger and poverty. This holiday season we’re asking for a different kind of gift: support. Support us by mentioning us to friends who share your concern for others. Support us by attending our next meeting Monday, November 30 at 8:00 p.m. in Holden Auditorium. Support us by visiting us at our upcoming Casino Royale fundraiser after Thanksgiving Break. Or support us with a direct donation at the PayPal link above.

Why eat responsibly?

Last meeting, we presented a PowerPoint on concerns about the way we shop and eat with simple solutions you can follow to support sustainability and ethical trading practices.

Remember, FAST-A-THON is this Tuesday.

Responsible Consumers

Hello!

Oxfam at Virginia Tech is getting ready to launch into a new week of fighting global injustice.

We have a meeting Monday, November 9 at 8:00 p.m. in Holden Auditorium.

If you have heard of us through our highly successful bake sales, you know that we like food. We like to think of our sales as ending hunger for yourself and others. So, as important as food is to our fundraising operations, we’re putting the spotlight on the foods that we buy. Our Ethical & Sustainable Food Supervisor will be guest speaking at our next meeting about making food purchasing choices that don’t support slave trades or harm the environment.

After the meeting, the powerpoint will be available for download on our site.

We also have a few guest speakers from other organizations doing good work. Remember, VT Oxfam is a networking platform for every group trying to help us change the world.

We have TWO on-campus opportunities coming up for Hokies to get involved.

Wednesday, November 11 is our DATE AUCTION in the Hillcrest Hall Dining Room at 7:30 p.m. You can show up and sign up to go on the auction block where some lucky Hokie may purchase the rights to spend some quality time with you. Or show up and bid on our many quality Hokies from Oxfam, Ut Proism El Porvenir, and the University Honors communities.

On Tuesday, November 17 the Muslim Students Association is hosting Fast-a-Thon, a whole day dedicated to feeding the hungry in Blacksburg and Montgomery County. It’s simple: Fill out the pledge form that you can find here and fast from sunrise to sundown on the 17th. Then, come to the Multipurpose Room of the Graduate Life Center at 5:00 p.m. for a free meal and a tally of all the money we raised for the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry.

It’s Thanksgiving time. Think of how much better that food will taste knowing you did your part to lessen hunger for somebody else.

See you tonight!

Oxfam Meeting

Well for Haiti and Fast-a-Thon

November 2nd, 2009 by Phillip Murillas No comments »

Hello and welcome to Oxfam at Virginia Tech.

This week, we’re organizing to raise $7,000 to build a well in Zoranger, Haiti. The people there are in desperate need of clean drinking water. Their current source of water is the only location to bathe, wash clothes, and wash away animal waste. This well would be the first step toward building an entire public health infrastructure. Following this, the community can focus on building a health clinic, an orphange, and latrines. It all starts with this well. And we’ll need every Hokie’s help.

We’re out on the Drillfield every Monday selling homemade baked goods and fair-trade coffee. A portion of our general funds go toward building the well. We will have fundraisers that are specific to the well project throughout the rest of the semester. An organizational meeting to plan how to raise funds is meeting tonight at 8:00 P.M. in Holden Auditorium. Anyone who wants to make a difference in this Haitian community is welcome to attend.

This year Oxfam at Virginia Tech is co-sponsoring Fast-a-Thon, an event that raises awareness of hunger in our community and organizes donations to the Blacksburg Interfaith Pantry for every person that pledges to fast from sunrise to sundown on November 17. Fast-a-Thon is organized by the Muslim Student Association.

You can pledge for Fast-a-Thon here.

If you want to directly help hungry people in Blacksburg, Virginia, you can donate via PayPal on their website or right here on our own.

Donate to Fast-a-Thon

This is the month for giving thanks for what you’ve got and considering what others need, so why not join us in the fight to help people at home and abroad?

Clean Water for Zoranger

October 27th, 2009 by Phillip Murillas No comments »

We’ve found our long-term project!

We have 22 people signed up for the group working toward the $8000 goal to build a well in Zoranger, Haiti. This could be the first of many improvements Oxfam at Virginia Tech directly establishes. We will be holding separate meetings for this Well Project committee.

Other committee news:

We will be selecting a representative to send to Coalition for Campus Sustainability meetings and become a member organizations.

We have a small lobbying team that will support legislation that reduces the harmful impact of extractive industries.

We will be setting up volunteer opportunities with Pilot Street, a Roanoke refugee program in the next two weeks.

Upcoming events:

Date Auction – November 11, 7:30 p.m. in the Hillcrest Hall Dining Room

Fast-a-Thon – November 17. Pledge to fast from sunrise to sundown this day and receive a free meal. Partner businesses will donate food to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry for every participant.

We got some new volunteers for our fundraising and marketing events, but WE ALWAYS NEED MORE HELP. If you can find time to help us sell coffee, baked goods or lollipops or to design banners, A-frames, and reserve some locations, e-mail Phillip Murillas at pmscribo(at)vt(dot)edu.

Our next meeting will have a brief presentation on current international aid events and focus on committees advancing their projects. Spread the word and hope to see more Hokies on November 9.

Meeting 3

A Billion for a Billion

October 23rd, 2009 by Phillip Murillas No comments »

Hey, internet community.

Usually we’re speaking directly to Virginia Tech Hokies, but now we’ve got an opportunity for anybody who views this page to make a difference. Here’s a video that every person on the web should watch:

Here’s the link to make a direct donation: https://www.wfp.org/donate/1billion

Spread the video. Get ten friends to donate what they can. Now that we’re facing the crisis of 1 billion chronically hungry people, Oxfam and fellow organizations will be tackling the problem harder than ever. And we need everyone’s help.

We’ve got a volunteer group to feed the homeless of Roanoke, Va. They will be volunteering at the Acts 2 Ministry from 3 to 5 on Sunday, October 25. If you live in the area and you would like to volunteer, there is still time to sign up. E-mail the Local Impact Coordinator at pmscribo(at)vt(dot)edu.

Our next meeting is this Monday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. in Holden Auditorium. We’re really excited, because we’ve talked to an individual who is really involved in helping a community in Haiti. He will most likely be making a presentation to the general group and we may very well have our first global impact project for the year.

There’s never been a better time to check us out. Hope to see many Hokies on Monday.

Calling all Hokies!

If you’re new to the site, you may have found us by purchasing some fair-trade coffee on the Drillfield. You may have spotted our logo on McBryde chalkboards and wondered what we are about. Thanks for taking time to visit us. In short, here’s what we’re doing:

Saving the world.

We’re Oxfam at Virginia Tech and we’re a chapter of an international organization committed to finding lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice worldwide. So far, we’ve established our own microlending group on Kiva, advertised a collection drive by the Filipino American Student Association to help victims of the recent Typhoons in the South Pacific, are organizing a local volunteer event for hungry people in Roanoke, and have developed committees who are working on finding communities in need and projects that can make a sustainable difference.

If you’re also sick and tired of the worsening situations for the millions of people suffering from hunger, extreme poverty and exploitation, we are your chance to start making a real difference. We are committed to not only fighting these diseases financially, but also tackling them directly with our three-step plan.

1. Find a target community and research their situation
2. Apply Virginia Tech minds to finding several approaches that will develop a sustainable solution
3. Find individuals and partner organizations that can serve the target communities with our financial support and program ideas

Our next meeting is Monday, October 26 in Holden Auditorium at 8 P.M. We’ll be splitting up into our different campaigns: Hunger & Poverty, Climate Change, and Extractive Industries. We welcome all other social justice organizations to come and make announcements for good causes.

Our first partnership is with the Filipino American Student Association. They are collecting goods for victims of Typhoons Ketsana (Odnoy) and Parma, which hit late September. They’re in need of the following materials:

  • Canned goods
  • Potable water
  • Medicine
  • Clothes
  • Slippers/Shoes
  • Blankets
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Sanitary Napkins
  • Kitchen Utensils
  • Plates
  • Towels
  • Toiletries
  • Monetary Donations

They will be collecting in Squires Students Center on the following dates:

Thursday, October 22, 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. – in front of the ATMs
Friday, October 23, 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. – Au Bon Pain Booth

VT Oxfam will be donating a box of donations from members. We are not only an initiative group, but a networking group with the aim of mobilizing all the active students on campus to turn hunger, poverty and suffering into a thing of the past.

This is only the beginning. By the end of next year, our goal is to have all of Virginia Tech’s campus involved to set an example for other universities nationwide. We believe in the impact 23,000 Hokies can have on these problems. Can you imagine what we can accomplish with millions of college students?

Last semester, VT raised over half a million dollars for Relay for Life. We are a phenomenal campus. Help us put Tech on the map for another amazing feat. We’re Oxfam at Virginia Tech and we want you to join the movement. End the suffering. Be the impact.

If you have specific questions you can e-mail us at oxfam(at)vt(dot)edu. You can ask to be added to our listserv for event and meeting announcements. We also form Facebook announcements for events and service projects on our Facebook group page. We meet every two Mondays in Holden Auditorium.

Hope to see you all next week.

Officially a record – 1 billion are going hungry

October 14th, 2009 by Phillip Murillas No comments »

The United Nations has officially recognized what Oxfam has been saying for years now. 1 billion in the world are not able to fulfill that basic human need — getting enough to eat. It’s a record number for the U.N., despite the past decade’s goals to reduce world hunger.

A record 1 billion people worldwide are hungry and a new report says the number will increase if governments do not spend more on agriculture. According to the U.N. food agency, which issued the report, 30 countries now require emergency aid, including 20 in Africa.

The trend continues despite a goal set by world leaders nine years ago to cut the number of hungry people in half by 2015….

….

“We know a child dies every six seconds of malnutrition,” [said Otive Igbuzor, the head of international campaigns for ActionAid International.]

Spiraling food prices have added to hardships, especially in the world’s most desperate countries where the poor could barely afford a single daily meal to begin with. The inflated prices — which caused riots across the globe last year — have stabilized but remain comparatively high, especially in the developing world, Jacques Diouf, director general of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, told AP Television News.

Children dying of malnutrition is in itself a terrible atrocity. But every six seconds? We don’t accept that. We don’t accept a single person dying from hunger or poverty.

At our last meeting, we established the three steps we plan to follow to make direct impact on the problems were are going to solve.

1. Find a target community and research their situation
2. Apply Virginia Tech minds to finding several approaches that will develop a sustainable solution
3. Find individuals and partner organizations that can serve the target communities with our financial support and program ideas

At our next meeting, we’re going to have more attendees than ever and we’re going to ask them to sit in at one of our action committees and start the process of saving lives.

There’s 23,000 people in this community. We can slow down those horrifying mortality rates. It’ll be the first step to eradicating this type of suffering from the face of the planet.

We’re Oxfam at Virginia Tech and we need your help.

Next meeting: Call to Action. Monday, October 26, 8:00 P.M. Holden Auditorium, Virginia Tech

Meeting 3

Reverse this trend. Join the movement. Be the impact.
